The Girl He Pretended to Be
About this drama
A college BL comedy built on a disguise everyone sees through except the person wearing it. Liam Carter has a crush on Chloe Brooks, and he watches her confess to his longtime rival and roommate Ethan Ward. Fueled by jealousy, he does the reasonable thing: he disguises himself as a sweet girl named Lily, plans to make Ethan fall for Lily, and expose him. The plan has one flaw, and the show states it plainly. Ethan has long been secretly in love with Liam, and he figures out the disguise from the very start. So the pursuit runs on a single dramatic irony: Liam thinks he is the hunter. Ethan knows he is the quarry's intended. While playing along with the pretense, Ethan waits for Liam to face his real feelings. Hidden agendas, misunderstandings and emotional entanglements unfold. Finally the truth comes out, the copy says, in the flat tone of a show that knows the destination was never in doubt. After countless twists, Liam lets go of the revenge plan and bravely accepts his own heart, starting a real relationship with Ethan. Sixty episodes, which is a long run for a campus comedy, and the official title given in the description, Lily Is Actually Liam, hands the twist to the audience in advance. That is the correct choice. The joke is not the reveal. The joke is watching Liam work so hard at a disguise that stopped working on day one.
