Day 99: The Lady He Married
About this drama
Her husband gives her a suitcase and thirty-six dollars, which is what she is worth to him. Vera answers an advertisement for a stepmother position with a family nobody sensible would take, and becomes Mrs. Moretti. The boy she is meant to raise has been through something, and he does not trust her, or anyone, and getting him to sleep in a house that feels like home is harder than any job description suggests. Vera is good at this in a way she did not expect. She builds a life of her own inside theirs, and it is stable enough and visible enough that her ex-husband notices. He and the woman who replaced her keep trying to take it apart, which they cannot quite manage, because the thing they are trying to destroy is a child sleeping through the night and a woman who is not going anywhere.
